Poetic Thrift: Denim

  • Oakshadow Studio 33947 S Sawtell Rd Molalla, OR 97038 United States (map)
Thrift is poetic because it is creative; waste is unpoetic because it is waste.
— G.K. Chesterton, What's Wrong with the World

Continue the Poetic Thrift series with this opportunity to convert a variety of old denim jeans into a fashionable tunic or unlined jacket and bonus tote bag. Personalize your garment with length and sleeve options, creative closures, various collar options and fabric accents such as seam or pocket binding. Some sewing experience is required.

There’s a history of thriftiness in many cultures. In Japan, mottainai is a term conveying a sense of regret concerning waste. The British proclaim, “Make do or do without.” The American phrase is “Waste not, want not,” to imply if you use a commodity or resource carefully and without extravagance, you will never be in need. This class is an exercise in creative re-use. By restructuring thrift store jeans we will construct new garments that are inexpensive, modern, and fully original.
