Expand on the basics of shibori and indigo dyeing with advanced techniques and more indigo recipes! We’ll practice more complex stitch-resist techniques including boshi, double arashi, compound itajime, and combination patterns, and explore a variety of indigo reduction methods including henna and iron-based vats.
All materials are included in workshop fee. An assortment of protein and cellulose fabric samples will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring additional fabrics, such as 2-4 yards of natural fiber, linen or cotton shirts, silk scarves, or other natural fiber blends. All materials should be pre-washed in hot water and dried without fabric softener.
Please be advised that students should wear appropriate clothing and shoes, items that you won’t mind potentially being stained with indigo. Bring a pair of rubber gloves and an apron if you like. If you wish to take home a sample of the indigo vat for further exploration, bring a one-gallon container with a tight fitting lid, such as a paint bucket.
Students are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Coffee, tea, water and light snacks will be served.
